How do Tricyclic antidepressants work for neck pains?

Neck pains are something that almost everyone these days has to deal with. One of the many methods of treating neck pains is through medication. Tricyclic Antidepressants are one of the medications that are used to treat patients with neck pains.

Tricyclic antidepressants are medicines that cause the inhibition of the re-uptake of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and serotonin, which directly influence the mood of a person. In case of pain, these medications can cause drowsiness and relieve pain, where as normally, these transmitters inhibit pain messages by creating a feeling of lightness and mood improvements.

Low doses of tricyclic antidepressants are used to treat neck pain and chronic neck pain patients. These minimized doses can improve sleep and often relieve fatigue, which only increase neck pains. Though it has not been experimentally proven, it is assumed that these drugs increase pain thresh hold levels and coping power. Chronic pains levels can often cause depression.

Because of the powerful nature of these drugs, they may cause drug dependency and addiction.  Patients should not use these medications unless ordered by a doctor, as they may be addictive.  Tofranil, Zonalon, Vanatrip and Sinequan are all examples of tricyclic anti depressants medications used in neck pain treatment.
