Risks associated with Nerve Block

While nerve blocks are a very effective way of relieving and reducing pain in many cases, such a pain relief method comes with complications of its own and there are many risks involved with the procedure.

Nerve blocks may cause serious problems like damage to the arteries, which provide the spinal cord with its supply of blood and paralysis. There are several other possible side effects, which are likely to occur no matter how rare.

These include:

  • Rashes
  • Extra energy
  • Bleeding
  • Gaining of weight
  • Soreness where the drug is injected
  • Itching
  • Elevated blood sugars
  • Diarrhea

Other possible risks of nerve blocks include the following:

  • Hypotension, where the patient may face dangerously low levels of blood pressure
  • Accidental injection of phenol or alcohol into an artery
  • The lung being punctured during injection of the drug for nerve block
  • Possible damage and negative effects on the kidneys
  • Loss of strength in the legs, causing weakness
  • Death (in very rare cases)

Although there are many types of nerve blocks that can be used, this treatment is not always suitable for all. Nerve blocks are highly discouraged if you have a disease that, in particular, affects the clotting of blood, or if you are being treated with blood-thinning drugs, or even if you have an obstruction in your bowel or any other type of infection that is uncontrolled. If whatever pain you are suffering from is not related to a small or single group of nerves, then being treated using nerve blocks might not possibly be the right way to relieve your pain for you.
