Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is the result of damage to the nerves. Such a nerve-related problem usually causes pain and numbness in people’s feet and hands. This pain is usually described as a burning or tingling sensation and affected people often suffer a complete loss of any sensation in the aforementioned body parts.

However, it is most common for peripheral neuropathy to initiate from the nerves, which are the longest such as the ones, which reach the toes and feet. Some specific symptoms and common signs of peripheral neuropathy occurring are as follows:

  • Burning pain
  • Lack of coordination
  • Electric-like, sharp and jabbing pain
  • Tingling and numbness in the hands or feet, which can gradually spread upward, and into the arms and legs.
  • Extreme sensitivity to touch
  • Weakening of the muscles or even paralysis
  • Bladder or bowel complications

Still, as has been seen in quite a lot of cases, peripheral neuropathy symptoms improve slowly with time, more so if the nerve-damage was caused by a treatable underlying condition. There are even a number of different medications that can be used to lessen the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, which are considered to be more painful than the others.
