What are the Medications Available for Treating Neck Pains?

Neck pain is an incredibly uncomfortable experience. It affects day to day life and might cause other acute pains too such as headaches. Exercise is definitely needed to prevent this but it becomes impossible to perform any sort of physical therapy with the pain being present. Some medications may ease up the pain enough to carry on therapies, others work as an anesthetic neutralize the pain.

A lot of painkillers, antidepressants etc. have been prescribed for this particular problem. But they have not provided satisfactory results.

The basic and preliminary medication should be rubbing and massaging ointments. Pain relieving sprays, gels or creams should be used as a first resource. If that does not show any result over the counter Acetaminophens are a choice of oral medications, which have proved to have successful effect on treating neck pains.

NSAIDs like aspirins are also a popular choice for neck pains, but they should be only consumed under doctor’s orders and should not be recommended to young children. Some narcotic pain relievers are suggested on intensive neck pains. They usually have a combination of acetaminophen, codeine, hydrocodeine, NSAIDs etc.

Antidepressants are given to patients whose neck pains seem to be the result of stress or depression. However, this can only be provided after a psychological analysis.

After getting control of the pain, mild exercises should be carried out to avoid future strains on the neck.
