What are the side effects of Acetaminophen?

Acetaminophen is one of the many drugs used to treat different types of pain. As with all pain medications, patients are prescribed weighing the benefits of the drugs against the side-effects. Most users do not suffer from any of the side-effects cautioned. However, the fact remains that the side-effects remain, and a minority of the users still suffer from them.
In the case of acetaminophen, side effects include;

  • Loss of appetite
  • Low fever
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Jaundice- like symptoms
  • Dark urine
  • Clay-colored stool
  • Rash
  • Hives
  • Breathing and swallowing  difficulty

Side- effects may also include inflammation of the;

  • Throat
  • Face
  • Hands
  • Feet
  • Tongue
  • Lips
  • Ankles
  • Eyes
  • Lower legs

Patients with liver disease or alcoholism history should inform their doctors of their condition so their dosage can be suitably altered.
More severe side-effects may include hallucinations, chest pains, rapid pulse, stomach pains, unusual fatigue and tremors.
Medication, no matter how minimal, should not be taken without a doctor’s prescription unless mentioned otherwise. In case of overdose or misuse, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
