What is Pain Management?

Pain is a common condition that can affect any part of the body, such as muscles, joints, or even bones. Pain can be acute or chronic. Acute pain is the pain that lasts for a short period of time, a few minutes, hours, or a few months – such as a burn or a cut. Chronic pain lasts for a longer period of time, usually for years, and it stays even if the injury is healed. Headaches, such as migraine and arthritis are common types of chronic pain.

Acute pain generally does not need any prescription as it is relieved in a short time; however, many prefer to take over-the-counter medications, such as Tylenol, to help faster pain relief. Chronic pain may require sufficient pain management measures in order to keep it under control.   Pain management for chronic pain depends upon the history and the severity of the pain. Techniques for pain management may include interventional procedures, prescription/medication management, psychological counseling, electrical stimulation, physical therapy, surgery, acupuncture or other alternative therapies. Pain management is most successful when a number of techniques are combined to provide a comprehensive treatment.

Pain management should be a multidisciplinary method and should be employed in an all-inclusive manner that addresses all aspects of the pain; only then can pain be alleviated from the body.
