Chronic Pain

Pain can be defined as being an unpleasant and uncomfortable feeling that is conveyed to the human brain by the body’s sensory nerves. Usually, this discomfort being caused acts as a signal of potential injury to the body.

This pain that affects the body can either be temporary and sudden or it can last for a long time. Chronic pain is the pain that occurs suddenly but persists and continues occurring for an extended period of time, even despite proper treatment of the underlying cause of the pain.

This chronic pain can be the result of long-term illnesses, such as arthritis and cancer, or it could be the lingering effects of an injury. It could even refer to cancer pain, pain that is related to a degenerative or persistent disease, and a long-term pain due to an unidentifiable cause. Also, people who experience chronic pain are most likely going to be either partially or completely disabled. Chronic pain may even be caused as a result of the reactions and responses of the body to acute pain.

Common causes and complaints of chronic pain are:

  • Back pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Cancer
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Arthriti

While chronic pain can be caused by an illness or injury, many causes of this type of pain are still unknown. Chronic pain may be treated through the use of proper medications, electrical stimulation, physical therapy, counseling, alternative therapies such as acupressure, acupuncture, yoga, massage, etc, as well as many other kinds of therapies.
