What is a Pain Control Diary?

Cancer pain can be quite inconsistent. To receive the best treatment to ease the pain, patients are suggested to keep a pain control diary. This helps the doctor to understand the nature of the pain more clearly as well as what treatment should be provided next if one fails to display effectiveness.

The pain control diary requires to be filled in with certain information such as when did the pain occur, how long it lasted for, how would the patient rate the pain, what medication did the patient take, what other treatment was followed with it and whether there were any side effects not. Usually if the pain is rated from 1 to 5 it is considered mild, 6 to7 is considered moderate, 8 to 9 is severe and 10 would be the worst case of pain imaginable.

This diary can help the doctor and the medical care team to evaluate the patient’s condition better and prescribe more efficient treatment if needed. The pain control diary may also be helpful to note down any sorts of irregularities and questions the patient wants to inquire to the doctor.

During cancer, the pain control diary is an excellent idea to record how consistent the pain is and how serious it is a well, which later on helps to figure out further treatments.
