What are some of the Over-the-counter Pain relievers? |
Over-the-counter pain relievers are a perhaps the first choice whenever someone is undergoing pain, be it chronic or acute. Over-the-counter pain relievers include Acetaminophen, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and topical pain relievers and Corticosteroids. One of the most common Acetaminophen drug is Tylenol, which used to treat various pain conditions, including stiff and aching muscles, mild headaches, and fever. Acetaminophen works on the sections of the brain that receives the pain signals. Tylenol is not very harmful to the stomach, but can harm the liver if taken excessively. Other Acetaminophens include Excedrin (Aspirin free). NSAIDs generally taken for pain release include Aspirin, Aleve and Motrin. NSAIDs work by inhibiting the production of hormone-like pain-causing substances called Prostaglandins. NSAIDs, besides relieving pain, also help to alleviate inflammatory conditions resulting from arthritis, fever or other injuries. Topical pain relievers are also available without a doctor’s prescription, which includes Ben-gay, Aspercreme, and Icy Hot. These are usually available in cream or spray form that can be used directly in the painful area - at joints for example. Creams containing Corticosteroids are also available. Despite a number of OTC drugs available for pain relief, it should be taken conservatively. If pain persists even after long term use of such products, it is better to talk to the doctor to get a prescribed dose of medication. |
