What are the controversies related to NSAIDs?

NSAIDs are Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory drugs. For those not familiar with medical jargons, and most people aren’t, these are drugs which reduce inflammation, swelling, fever and are often prescribed as painkillers.

The NSAIDs do not affect most people adversely. However, one should remember that these madications come in pill form – they circulate through the entire body, not just the sore parts. These are foreign chemicals entering the body, and they may do some damage if precautions are not taken.

The most common problem related to NSAIDs is the formation of ulcers in the alimentary canal – the inner lining of the windpipe, small intestine and stomach. The same chemicals that cause the painful swelling also protect these areas inside the body. Once the NSAIDs prevent these chemicals from functioning, ulcers start to form.

NSAIDs are also linked to hypertension and kidney damage, because it slows down the flow of blood to the kidneys. This prevents fluid from being filtered out for the body, and leads to many complications.

NSAIDs are also said to cause extreme allergic reactions, although a clear cause has not been discovered as to why. Asthmatics are therefore advised to stay away from NSAIDs.
