Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is also known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome, in which an affected site is equipped with high levels of nerve impulses. Researches show that CRPS happens due to dysfunction in the peripheral or central nervous system. It is usually common in people with an age of 20-35 years, but sometimes it also affects children. Women are more susceptible to this than men.
What are the causes for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome?
CRPS do not have a single cause, but instead it has multiple causes to produce the symptoms. Experts found out that the pain receptors located in the affected areas become responsive to catecholamine, which is a group of nervous system messengers. When CRPS is related to injury, the immune system triggers the symptoms which may lead to reddish inflammation and warmth in the affected area. Thus CRPS acts as a blockage to the healing process of an infection.
Is there any treatment?
There is no particular treatment for CRPS, but all of the treatments focus on the relieving of painful symptoms. No single drug gives long lasting results, but doctors usually prescribe antidepressant, analgesics, opioids and corticosteroids to relive pain. |
