Cox-2 inhibitors are part of a category of drugs which stop the cox-2 enzyme. This enzyme is involved in the inflammation pathway. It also helps to reduce gastrointestinal toxicity by sparing Cox-1. These drugs are newest forms of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also known as NSAIDs.
Some of the common forms of Cox-2 inhibitors include the following:
- Celebrex/ Celecoxib – This is the only COX-2 selective NSAID which is currently in the market and they fall under a much larger category of drugs which are intended to reduce inflammation, stiffness or arthritis pain.
- Vioxx – This drug falls under the generic drug name Rofecoxib and is also used to treat the inflammation and arthritis pain.
- Bextra – This is known also as Valdecoxib but is no longer in the market.
- Prexige – This is known also as lumiracoxib, and is a selective inhibitor medication but is not out in the market yet. It is currently under the development of Novartis.
- Arcoxia – Its generic name is Etoricoxib and is more of an investigational arthritis drug and is currently being developed by Merchk.
The main cox-2 inhibitors include most of these drugs all of which are used to reduce arthritis pain or inflammation.
