What is Cancer Pain?

Cancer, one of the most deadly diseases known to haunt mankind is associated with inducing pain in an affected individual. Cancer pains are induced by the tumors burning into your bones, organs, nerves and even cancer treatments i.e. chemotherapy is known to cause sensations where they are injected and in other places such as hands and feet. Cancer pain can either range from chronic to acute. Acute pain is more short-term and can be treated with painkillers whereas chronic is more long-lasting and is often oblivious to medication. Some of the types of cancer pain are stated below:

  • Nerve pain – is also known as neuropathic pain and is caused when tumors presses down and damages the nerves and spinal cord.

  • Bone pain- occurs when the cancer spreads through areas of the bone and destroys bone tissues.

  • Soft tissue pain- also known as visceral pain, it occurs when the cancer starts effecting organs and muscles of the body and causes throbbing.

  • Phantom pain- It means pain in the part of the body that has been eradicated and occurs especially in breast cancer after the breast has been removed.

  • Referred pain- occurs when one feels pain in the body due to deterioration of other parts in the body.
