How to Protect your back while sitting?

People complain about back pain, but rarely do they actively do something about it other than roping in their significant others into giving them a back massage. Eventually, if the pain gets too much, they go to a doctor – and find out first-hand what a world of pain they are in for.

Back pain can be long drawn, painful, and mask underlying conditions. The structure of the vertebrae is extremely delicate – undue strain can damage it, and often the damage is irreparable.

Here are a few things you can do to protect your back:

  • When sitting, keep shoulders back so that your lower back curves inward slightly.

  • You can place a pillow or a rolled up towel in the curve of your back while sitting, for support. There are lumbar rolls available for this purpose.

  • When driving a car, remember to keep your shoulders back and both hands on the wheel. The arms should be slightly flexed for comfort. Your knees should be level with your hips, so adjust your car seat to accommodate that.

  • If you sit and work a lot, get up and stretch as often as you can.
